The estranged Kenyan-born aunt of President Barack Obama, who has been living in the U.S. illegally since 2004, is once again seeking asylum.
According to a report appearing on WorldNetDaily.com, Zeituni Onyango, the 56 year old half-sister of Obama’s father, has hired an attorney and is expected to attend an immigration hearing in Boston on April 1.
“The judge will be looking at evidence that they may not have been aware of four years ago,” Michael Rogers, a spokesman for Onyango’s attorney, Margaret Wong, told the Cleveland Plain Dealer. “Wong is optimistic. We would have preferred to not conduct this case in the media spotlight, but that’s not going to happen.”
Onyango has been living in a South Boston slum since a judge rejected her request for asylum in 2004. Shortly after the election, she fled to Cleveland, Ohio to escape media coverage, during which time she hired an attorney to help her remain in the U.S. She returned to Boston in late December.
On Dec. 17, an immigration judge stayed an order to deport her, and a spokeswoman for the U.S. Executive Office of Immigration Review said her case for asylum was reopened on Dec. 30.
According to the Associated Press, Onyango attended Obama’s swearing-in ceremony and an inaugural ball at Washington’s Renaissance Mayflower Hotel, accompanied by her lawyer. However, Rogers claims she never met with the president during inaugural festivities.
