JB writes: “I have recently heard of the Barre Method or bar method of exercise, referred to being similar to a ballet workout. Is this form of exercise related in any way to New Age? Is it OK to do?”
The Bar Method is not at all New Age and is a great alternative to exercise programs that involve pilates and/or yoga.
As this site explains and illustrates, the Bar Method is a kind of interval training that uses isometic exercises performed in an upright position using a ballet bar. Unlike pilates which uses mainly sitting or prone mat work to exercise core muscles, the Bar Method relies on the body’s own weight for resistance. Designed under the guidance of physical therapists, it is non-impact and targets all major muscle groups.
Best of all, it focuses entirely on fitness with a goal to improving strength, physical grace, stamina, and a well-sculpted body.
So if you’re tired of eastern-oriented exercise programs with all of their religious trappings, this is a good solid alternative.
