In what is surely the paradox of the century, Six Rivers Planned Parenthood of Eureka, California, has launched a campaign designed by Faith Aloud to mimic the successful 40 Days for Life campaign by calling for 40 days of prayer for those committing abortions: the mothers, the escorts, the abortionists, and everyone involved – except the unborn children.
According to a press release from the Liberty Counsel, a nonprofit litigation firm devoted to advancing traditional values, the prayer event, called 40 Days of Prayer: Supporting Women Everywhere, is supported by the so-called Clergy for Choice, “religious leaders who value all human life.”
“In truth, the purported ‘clergy’ only value life once it reaches a certain age and actively seek to destroy the lives of defenseless preborn children,” the release states.
“The concerted effort of this group to dehumanize children based on their age is similar to a tactic once used in Nazi Germany towards the Jews and other non-Arians: first ostracize them from the rest of society, and then annihilate them. Planned Parenthood’s attempts to develop a ‘spiritual’ aspect to the pro-abortion argument can seem comparable to the religious leaders in Germany who supported Adolf Hitler and the Nazis. It was wrong then and it is wrong now.”
Some of the prayers for the 40 days published in a pamphlet provided by Faith Aloud, which provides spiritual resources for women who are considering their pregnancy options, include:
- Day 1: Today we pray for women for whom pregnancy is not good news, that they know they have choices.
- Day 4: Today we pray for the doctors who provide quality abortion care, and pray that they may be kept safe.
- Day 5: Today we pray for medical students who want to include abortion care in their practice. May they receive good training and find good mentors.
- Day 34: Today we give thanks for abortion escorts who guide women safely through hostile gauntlets of protestors.”
- Day 40: Today we give thanks and celebrate that abortion is still safe and legal.”
Throughout the 40 days, not a single prayer is offered for the children who are killed by abortion!
Mathew Staver, Founder and Chairman of Liberty Counsel, commented: “Planned Parenthood’s ‘prayer’ campaign is offensive. As much as they might not like the comparison, Planned Parenthood today is no different than the eugenics promoted by its founder Margaret Sanger who advocated the elimination of ‘undesirables,’ just like the most famous eugenicist, Adolf Hitler.”
Pro-life activist Lila Rose calls the twisted campaign “a desperate attempt to take advantage of the wild success and growth of the 40 Days for Life campaign.”
However, as she points out, “you can’t take the same ‘techniques’ and get the same result when you are trying to twist them for an evil purpose. So we know that their 40 days of ‘prayer’ for abortion is going nowhere, just like their pro-abortion agenda.”
David Bereit, National Director of 40 Days for Life, told LifeSiteNews.com that the campaign wasn’t entirely new.
“Some say that ‘imitation is the sincerest form of flattery,’ but when that imitation is being used to promote the killing of innocent children, we are anything but flattered,” said Bereit.
While he has seen “prayers” posted outside clinics during 40 Days for Life campaigns, this is the first time he’s seen an official campaign sponsored by a Planned Parenthood affiliate.
“Planned Parenthood has stooped to a new low by exploiting pastors and churches to ‘celebrate’ the slaughter of babies made in God’s image and likeness,” he said. “They certainly wouldn’t be doing this if 40 Days for Life wasn’t having a devastating impact on their abortion business!”
