The promotion of policies that threaten religious freedom has taken a toll on President Barack Obama’s poll numbers with presumptive GOP candidate Mitt Romney now holding a commanding lead over the president among white evangelicals and Roman Catholics.

The Religion News Service is reporting that a poll released this week by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press found that President Obama’s support has dropped in the last month among Roman Catholics by eight percent, with his support among Protestants suffering a loss of five points.

Romney now leads among white Catholic voters 57 vs. 37 percent, and by an even wider margin – 73 vs. 20 percent – among white evangelicals. Current polling shows nine in 10 white evangelicals now say they support Romney, with 84 percent saying there is no chance they will change their mind.

The president’s main support is among those with no religious affiliation who favor him over Romney by 67 to 26 percent. For instance, those who attend religious services regularly favor Romney 56 to 38 percent while almost the exact numbers of those who do not attend regular services favor the president – 56 to 37 percent.

Those who consider birth control to be an important issue favor the president by 56 to 37 percent; however, the issue barely makes the list of issues Americans say will drive them to the polls this November. More than 80 percent say the state of the economy and jobs will determine their vote in the next election.
