Vatican Fights Back! Sues Magazine for Offensive Cover

The Vatican has had enough of the media’s penchant for publishing blasphemous images of Pope Benedict XVI while calling it “free speech” and filed an injunction yesterday against the German magazine, Titanic, for an offensive cover image of the pope.

OpenSalon is reporting that the magazine cover, which is too offensive to be shown here, pictures the pope with a simulated urine stain on the front of his robes beneath the title “Hallelujah in the Vatican: The leak has been found!” a clear reference to the Vatileaks scandal. The back cover displays a rear view of the pope with a similar offensive smear on his robes and the words, “Oops, another leak!”

Even though the magazine is infamous for its edgy covers, as Matthias Kopp of the German Bishop’s Conference puts it, “Titanic has gone beyond the boundaries of the tolerable.”

As a result, Vatican lawyers filed an injunction against the magazine. According to a letter sent by Archbishop Angelo Becciu to a German lawyer, he was asked to “take the necessary legal steps against this publication.

He added:  “The Holy Father tasks you to institute proceedings against this violation of his personal rights.”

A regional court in the northern city of Hamburg told Inquirer News that authorities had already forbidden the magazine from publishing any more editions with the offensive cover.

Titanic editor, Leo Fischer, issued a statement saying that “Benedict must have misunderstood us” and claims the cover shows the pope after accidentally spilling a soft drink on his cassock.

Unfortunately for Titanic, no one is buying it. And for good reason. This magazine has been plagued by lawsuits since its founding in 1979. Thus far, 55 suits have been brought by offended celebrities and institutions, requiring a total of 35 issues to be banned thus far in the magazine’s history.
