Before heading out to the stores this Christmas, you might want to check out the latest “Naughty or Nice” list of stores that celebrate Christmas – and get involved in a boycott of those that don’t!
The American Family Association has published its traditional list of stores whose marketing and in-store advertising celebrates Christmas and those that go out of their way to avoid naming the reason for the season.
A few of the stores that aren’t afraid to keep Christ in Christmas include Amazon.com, Bed Bath and Beyond, Kohl’s, Macy’s, Best Buy, Costco, CVS and QVC.
Stores such as Safeway, Starbucks and Whole Foods only refer to Christmas occasionally in their advertising.
Retailers who refuse to put Christ in Christmas include Gap Stores, Old Navy, Staples, L.L. Bean, Footlocker and Barnes & Noble.
This year, the AFA is calling for a limited two-month boycott of Gap, Old Navy and Banana Republic, the three stores owned by San Francisco-based Gap Inc., over the company’s censorship of the word “Christmas” which they refuse to use on their website or in ads.
“Gap and Old Navy are censoring the word Christmas, pure and simple,” the AFA writes. “Yet the company wants all the people who celebrate Christmas to do their shopping at their stores. Until Gap proves it recognizes Christmas by using it in their newspaper, radio and television advertising or in-store signage, the boycott will be promoted.”
In addition to the list and boycott, the AFA is also offering help to anyone who encounters hostility toward Christmas. In conjunction with the Alliance Defense Fund (ADF), they will provide resources for government and public school authorities who act under the assumption that they must censor Christmas.
“You can contact ADF at (1-800-TELL-ADF ) for a copy of their legal analysis and memo on rights of seasonal expression at Christmas,” the AFA advises.
“We want to inform public officials about the law, and then encourage them to take a stand for Christmas.”
