Study: New York City Awash in STDs

A newly released study by New York City’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene has found that residents in certain areas of the city are experiencing soaring rates for multiple sexually transmitted diseases (STD).

CBSNewYork is reporting that the study included 181 zip codes in the City and found alarming rates of infection of HIV/AIDS, chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis and hepatitis B. Thirty-three percent of all zip codes in the City were in the top quintile for multiple STDs.

One of the hardest hit areas is the Tremont section of the Bronx which ranked in the top quintile for all seven diseases surveyed. Forty-three percent of the residents in this neighborhood live below the federal poverty line.

Thirteen Manhattan zip codes also ranked in the top quintile for HIV/AIDS and syphilis, areas that include Chelsea, Central Harlem, and Greenwich Village-SoHo.

The CBS article ended by asking people what should be done to stop the spread of STDs.

Not all responses could be considered “politically correct”, such as this one from a commenter named “otay” who could not have put it more succinctly.

“They should all go to church and ask for forgiveness.”
