The National Organization for Women (NOW) has finally decided the time has come to take the president to task for the scarcity of women in his White House.
Breitbart is reporting that NOW issued a statement of discontent about the situation, which has been a well-known fact for some time, and are urging him to appoint not just a woman – but a woman of color – to his new Cabinet.
“President Obama has made a number of high-profile appointments recently — four at last count — and they are all white men,” the group said in an e-mail blast to members.
They go on to encourage their membership to sign a petition asking the president to rethink his plans to appoint only white men to his new Cabinet.
“I am concerned that the current trend in your Cabinet appointments has excluded women and people of color,” the petition reads. “Women, especially women of color, are being disproportionately affected by current debates over the federal budget, education policy and access to health care, and their perspective needs to be represented among your top advisers. There is no doubt that qualified women exist for each and every position you will be called to fill, so there is no excuse to consign the vast majority of decision-making power and authority to men.”
The group also complained about the way UN Ambassador Susan Rice was treated when she was briefly considered as a possible replacement for Secretary of State Hilary Clinton. They claim Rice “was pushed aside and replaced with a white male nominee” when the “right wing unjustly smeared” her.
After a bruising presidential campaign in which the president brutally attacked conservatives of being “anti-woman,” even the ultra-liberal New York Democrat Rep. Charlie Rangel says the president’s non-diverse Cabinet is embarrassing.
“We’ve been through all of this with [2012 GOP presidential nominee] Mitt Romney. And we were very hard with Mitt Romney with the women binder and a variety of things. And I kind of think there’s no excuse with the second term,” Rangel admitted.
As Breitbart’s William Bigelow rightly concludes: “Oh, the irony.”
