During an interview on Vatican Radio, Archbishop Mauro Piacenza said the Vatican is planning to publish a handbook on the Sacrament of Reconciliation this year with the hopes of bringing more Catholics back to this vital sacrament.
Archbishop Piacenza, an official from the Vatican’s office for clergy, revealed the planned handbook while lamenting the small number of faithful who regularly confess their sins. He said the sacrament of penance has been experiencing a “deep crisis” for decades. Fewer people distinguish between good and evil, he said, and as a result don’t go to confession. Without this sense of sin, the faithful are prone to “confuse” confession with “the couch of a psychologist or a psychiatrist.”
No date has been set for the release of the handbook.
