The horrors perpetuated within the West Philadelphia abortion clinic of Dr. Kermit Gosnell has sparked a resolution introduced in the U.S. Senate on Monday to review public policies on abortions performed at or after viability of the fetus.
“Congress has the responsibility to investigate and conduct hearings on abortions performed near, at or after viability in the United States, public policies regarding such, and evaluate the extent to which such abortions involve violations of the natural right to life of infants who are born alive or are capable of being born alive, and therefore are entitled to equal protection under the law,” the resolution states.
According to Politico, it was introduced on Monday by Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) and was co-signed by Sens. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), Pat Toomey (R-Pa.), Ted Cruz (R-Texas), Tim Scott (R-S.C.) and other Republican senators.
The resolution was introduced in response to the horrific killing of viable infants born alive in the clinic of Kermit Gosnell, many of whom had their spines snipped with scissors or their throats slit.
“The facts of the Gosnell case are disturbing and heartbreaking,” Lee said in a statement. “It should be a wake-up call to all Americans. The lack of oversight at abortion facilities puts women’s lives at risk and leads to the kind of unconscionable practices we have seen recently.”
He continued: “The Senate should formally recognize that this is a problem in our country and we have a responsibility to investigate the causes, review the effects of certain public policies and determine what we can do to prevent any woman from being subjected to these reprehensible practices again.”
The resolution is asking lawmakers to gather information about and then correct “abusive, unsanitary and illegal abortion practices and the interstate referral of women and girls to facilities engaged in dangerous or illegal second- and third-trimester procedures.”
Although pro-abortion forces claim the Gosnell clinic is an aberration, there have been similar problems with abortion clinics in many other states, most recently in Delaware where the appalling conditions and repeated botched abortions has resulted in the closing of all abortion clinics in that state.
