A Milwaukee elementary school is under fire for hosting a cross-dressing day on which students were encouraged to come to school dressed as the opposite sex.
The Daily Caller is reporting that the strange theme was hosted by the Tippecanoe School for the Arts and Humanities as part of their school spirit week. Members of the school’s student council suggested the transgender theme, which they dubbed “Gender Bender Day”.
As local news outlets are reporting, it didn’t go over very well with parents.
“I was speechless actually, and I asked a few of the neighbors because I thought I was overreacting, stuff like that, and everybody was speechless,” said one mother to WITI. The woman, who did not wish to be identified, said her seven year-old son was confused by the idea. As a result, she and several other parents she knew decided to keep their kids home from school that day.
Deidri Hernandez, the mother a second-grader at Tippecanoe, found out about the plan and complained to the principal. School officials allegedly responded by saying that the school’s actions were not illegal and that participation was voluntary. However, officials did choose to change the name of the day to “Switch It Up Day.”
“I didn’t have a problem with the title. I had a problem with the activity taking place,” said parent Deirdri Hernandez to EAGnews. She found the whole idea of cross-dressing at a grade school to be “ridiculous” and “creepy.”
“They might as well call it ‘Transgender Day,’” she said.
Apparently, the students were as unimpressed with Gender Bender Day as their parents. Local news outlets report that they found not a single student who chose to cross-dress on that day. The only people who did so were some teachers and staffers.
