Angry parents have banded together to launch a petition drive against The Hub, a children’s network owned by Discovery Channel, for launching a new cartoon about a boy whose “magic ring” transforms him into a female superhero in pink tights, makeup and thigh-high boots.
The petition was launched against the new show, SheZow, which is based on the escapades of a 12 year-old boy named Guy who accidentally puts on a magic ring that turns him into a female superhero. The Hub hoped this new cartoon would help it gain some traction in the ratings war with children’s television giants Nickelodeon and the Cartoon Network, but it has definitely gotten off to a bad start.
“SheZow is cloaked in innocence and comedy, but its clear agenda is to compromise the consciences of our children by normalizing the LGBT lifestyle and moral indecency,” the petition reads. “We must not be fooled!”
It goes on to say that SheZow has already garnered praise from the LGBT community. Gay gossip blogger Perez Hilton openly praised SheZow as the “First Transgender Superhero Cartoon” stating, “we never knew children’s television could be so awesome!!!”
However, it’s creator, Obie Scott Wade (Julius & Friends) said he had no such political agenda in mind when he created the show. He told io9.com that he’s surprised by the backlash, especially after the cartoon aired in Australia last December and was well-received. He believes parents are reading too much into the storyline.
“I didn’t set out to make a show about any sort of political agenda, I just wanted to make a comedy,” he said. “I wanted to make a cartoon that I would have liked as a kid. So I think people are just reading a lot into it.”
He also clarified that when Guy puts the ring on his finger, none of his body parts change. He remains a boy, which technically makes the character a transvestite rather than a transgendered person.
Concerned parents are not at all relieved by these explanations and want the show off the air.
“Cartoons like SheZow are ambitious attempts to confuse our children of what they know is true of gender differences, and seek to expose them to inappropriate behavior at an incredibly vulnerable age,” the petition states.
“In fact, the target audience for SheZow is children aged two to eleven! This type of reckless programming endorsed by the The Hub and proponents of the LGBT lifestyle must be taken off the air immediately! We demand programming that promotes clarity in values, not confusion.”
