Same-Sex Marriage in the Classroom

schoolchildrenNow that the Supreme Court has issued two key rulings considered favorable to the issue of same-sex marriage, legal experts are warning parents that public schools will be teaching this subject in ways they might not approve.

Jeremy Tedesco, Legal Counsel for Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), says the recent decisions will have a profound impact on children who attend public schools.

“Public schools focus as much on shaping a student’s values as they do on teaching the three Rs,” Tedesco writes.

“Indeed, in a recent student speech case (Morse v. Frederick), Supreme Court Justices Samuel Alito and Anthony Kennedy observed that schools are increasingly ‘defin[ing] their educational missions as including . . . whatever political and social views are held by . . . the school administrators and faculty’.”

As most parents of public school children already know, the values taught in the nation’s schools are informed by a secular worldview that is hostile to Christianity, especially when it comes to the contentious issue of marriage.

“Schools have pushed the normalization of same-sex relationships and the view that they are equivalent to heterosexual marriage on kindergarteners and first graders,” Tedesco writes.

“And groups like GLSEN and the ACLU are demanding, both in the media and the courts, that school districts incorporate such teachings into their curricular materials. Now, with the Supreme Court (sadly) saying in the DOMA case that merely defining marriage as a relationship between a man and a woman is rank bigotry, we can expect these groups to increase their efforts.”

Tedesco quotes the words of Dennis Van Roekel, president of the National Education Association (NEA), who praised the Supreme Court’s decisions as “a huge step forward for civil rights” and said that the NEA, because of what they do and who they serve, “will always be on the frontline of this battlefield.”

These words should be chilling to any Christian parent of a public school student, Tedesco says, calling it an “unabashed acknowledgement that the NEA sees its members’ role as indoctrinating students with its pro-homosexual, anti-marriage views.”

This is why the time has come for Christian students to learn how to boldly and respectfully defend biblical marriage at school.

“We should not — cannot — shy away from this critical, nation-shaping issue. Rather, we should encourage our children to be like Isaiah who, when God asked ‘Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?’ answered, ‘Here am I. Send me!’” (Isaiah 6:8)
