Egyptian Catholic Bishop Critical of Obama

A spokesman for the Catholic bishops of Egypt says President Barack Obama does not understand the situation in his country and was surprised that the president didn’t even mention the violence being perpetrated against Christians.

Catholic World Report obtained the translation of an article written by Valentina Colombo of the Italian newspaper, La Nuova Bussola, which contained quotes from a number of Christian leaders in Egypt.

“Obama does not appear to understand the situation,” said Father Rafiq Greiche to AsiaNews. “In his speech he didn’t even so much as mention all the churches and Christian buildings being burnt down by the Muslim Brotherhood. This must absolutely be made clear: the Muslim Brothers are terrorists, and are tied to groups belonging to Al Qaeda and to the Salafites. The history of the Muslim Brotherhood, ever since their foundation, has been a history of 85 years of bloodshed.”

Father Greiche explained that the Muslim Brotherhood puts out two different messages – to the Western media they speak about democracy, but to the Arab media they talk about their plan to impose sharia law on the country and to build a Caliphate that will include other Arab nations.

“Either Obama doesn’t understand what’s going on, or he is an accomplice to this project,” Father Greiche said.

He also emphasized that the conflict in Egypt is not a civil war, but a war between Egyptians and terrorists.

“It should be emphasized that Muslims who live in the vicinity of the affected churches have helped men and women religious to put out the fires of the religious buildings,” Father Greiche told Fides.

“This is not a civil war between Christians and Muslims. It is not a civil war but a war against terrorism. And the majority of the population is against terrorism and religious extremism.”
