Blasphemous Burger Sparks Outrage

A Chicago restaurant is outraging the public with a new “Ghost Burger” that features an unconsecrated communion host on top.

The Daily Mail is reporting on the new burger selection being offered at Kuma’s Corner restaurant in Chicago. Many of the restaurant’s burgers are named after heavy metal bands such as Pantera, Black Sabbath and Slayer. This one is supposedly named after a Swedish band called Ghost B.C., a group whose lead singer wears skull make-up and dresses like a Roman Catholic cardinal.

On their Facebook page, Kuma’s restaurant says the new burger was created “in the spirit of our undying reverence for the lord and all things holy” and call it a “fitting tribute to the supreme blasphemous activities carried out by the band itself.”

Aside from a topping of chili aioli, goat shoulder and white cheddar cheese, it includes a red wine reduction simulating the “blood of Christ” and the communion wafer as the “body of Christ.”

Even though some people think it’s funny, not everyone is laughing, and the restaurant is aware of the mounting displeasure.

Luke Tobias, the restaurant’s director of operations, admits that some people have been offended by the burger.

“People have been kind of upset,” he told the Chicago Tribune. “The thing with this is, the communion wafer is unconsecrated, so until that happens, it’s really just a cracker.”

Even using an unconsecrated host should be off-limits, says Jeff Young, producer of the Catholic Foodie blog, because using a host on top of a hamburger is “a mockery of something that is holy.”

“It’s not the Eucharist, but it’s still symbolic,” Young told the Tribune. “For us as Catholics, the Eucharist is more than a symbol, it’s a sacrament. At the same time, it doesn’t mean that symbols aren’t important.”

The restaurant is only offering the burger at one of its two locations and thus far has no intention of pulling the item off the menu.

“It’s not a commentary on the state of religion or anything like that,” Tobias said. “It’s literally, ‘We like this band; we think what they do is cool.'”

In other words, blaspheming the Catholic faith is “cool.”
