Satanists Plan to Erect State House Monument

satanA group of Satanists is seeking to erect a monument to Satan on the steps of the Oklahoma State Capitol in response to the recent erection of a monument to the Ten  Commandments.

The Associated Press (AP) is reporting that the erection of the Christian monument in 2009 may result in opening the door to monuments representing other faiths on public property, including a group of Satanists who are already talking about erecting their own monument.

The New York-based Satanic Temple notified the Capitol Preservation Commission that it intends to submit plans for the erection of a monument on Capitol grounds.

“We believe that all monuments should be in good taste and consistent with community standards,” said Lucien Greaves, a spokesman for the temple. “Our proposed monument, as an homage to the historic/literary Satan, will certainly abide by these guidelines.”

One of the designs, which could cost about $20,000, features an interactive display for children.

Greaves credits Oklahoma Rep. Mike Ritze (R), whose family helped pay for the erection of the Ten Commandments monument, for opening the door to the Satanists

“He’s helping a satanic agenda grow more than any of us possibly could,” Greaves said. “You don’t walk around and see too many satanic temples around, but when you open the door to public spaces for us, that’s when you’re going to see us.”

The Oklahoma chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union is suing for the removal of the Ten Commandments, saying that the state’s government should not allow the erection of monuments to any religion; however, if they allow one, they cannot reject others from erecting monuments, even though they are Satanists.
