A Utah mother was shopping with her son in a local mall when she came across a display of indecent t-shirts in a store window and, when she couldn’t get the manager to remove them, decided to buy them herself just to get them out of sight.
The Associated Press is reporting on the story of Judy Cox who was shopping with her 18 year-old son when she saw indecent t-shirts on display in a PacSun store.
“The shirts featured pictures of scantily dressed models in provocative poses,” the AP reports. “Cox said she complained about the window display to a store manager and was told the T-shirts couldn’t be taken down without approval from the corporate office. She then bought all 19 T-shirts in stock, for a total of $567. She says she plans to return them later, toward the end of the chain store’s 60-day return period.”
Cox is planning to meet with an attorney to determine whether the images on the t-shirts violate the city code.
“These shirts clearly cross a boundary that is continually being pushed on our children in images on the Internet, television and when our families shop in the mall,” she told the AP.
Mall manager Rob Kallas told the AP that not only is the window display down now because of Cox’s purchase, but the store clerk admitted she was embarrassed to put up the display and only did so because she was told to it by corporate managers. When he saw the t-shirts, he agreed that they were inappropriate.
“This is a store that caters to junior high and high school age kids,” Kallas said. “Some of the poses were provocative and were inappropriate for a store catering to young people.”
As for Cox, she’s hoping her actions will inspire others to speak up when they see inappropriate images displayed in places where children can see them.
“I hope my efforts will inspire others to speak up within their communities,” Cox said in an email. “You don’t have to purchase $600 worth of T-shirts, but you can express your concerns to businesses and corporations who promote the display of pornography to children.”
