In what police are calling the most cold-hearted case yet, a 34 year-old Brooklyn woman was punched in the face and knocked unconscious while walking down the street with her mother.
The New York Daily News is reporting that the victim, Jannatul Ferdous,
Who is seven months pregnant, was attacked on Thursday afternoon by an unknown man who hit her in the face so hard she lost consciousness. Thankfully, both Ferdous and her unborn baby are reportedly doing fine.
The assailant, Willie Stephens, 33, was arrested soon after the attack.
“She was walking with my mom and a man slapped her and she fell down,” said a neighbor, who witnessed the attack but prefers to remain anonymous. “He just did it for no good reason!”
A police officer was nearby the scene at the time of the attack and immediately called for help. Meanwhile, witnesses were able to give him a description which quickly led to the arrest.
Ferdous was able to identify Stephens as the man who attacked her.
“I’m happy he’s in jail because he can’t hurt anyone else,” Ferdous said. “The baby is perfectly fine and we’re going to press charges. He needs to serve his time. We want to stop him from hurting someone else.”
Just five days ago, also in New York City, a 72 year-old man was punched in the face by two youth who ran off and are still at large. The victim was taken to the hospital and treated for cuts and bruises.
However, 46 year-old Ralph Erick Santiago, wasn’t so lucky. He lost his life after being punched in the face by a 14 year-old on the streets of Hoboken, New Jersey last year. The teen who pleaded guilty to the assault is currently serving six years in juvenile prison.
There have been an increasing number of these incidents since 2013, although what the media have dubbed the “knock-out game” has been around for awhile. The first known death occurred in September, 1992 in Cambridge, Massachusetts when a Norwegian exchange student named Yngve Rausten was killed after being attacked by three teens.
Since then, there have been many deaths attributed to this “game” which is aimed at knocking someone out with one punch.
