A play that originally opened in Manhattan in 1998 to bomb threats and protests because it portrays Jesus as a homosexual, was brought back to the stage in a California church this past weekend.
According to America Needs Fatima, a Catholic organization dedicated to promoting the message of our Lady at Fatima, the play Corpus Christi, which depicts Jesus as a gay man living in Texas in the 1950s, was performed at the Church of the Foothills in Santa Ana, California on Nov. 14.
Written by playwright Terrance McNally and performed by 108 Productions, McNally claims the play’s message is being “lost in the rancor” and that he is attempting to “include the LGBT community at the table of faith and to reclaim our right to explore the divinity in all of us.”
In the play, a Christ-like figure has homosexual relations with his apostles. The script is also peppered with misrepresentations of Gospel passages such as when Pilate asks Jesus, “Art thou king of the Jews” which is changed to “Art thou King of the queers” in the play.
“This is horrific,” says ANF director Robert E. Ritchie. “It’s time for Catholics to defend Jesus’ honor by peacefully, but loudly raising our voices against this outrageous blasphemy. And please offer fervent prayers and ardent sacrifices in reparation.”
