Officials at a key global-warming research center in the United Kingdom have authenticated e-mails and other documents obtained by hackers in which scientists discuss how to manipulate or suppress evidence that discredits the theory of global warming.
According to Australia’s Investigate magazine, a 62 megabyte Zip file with documents, e-mail exchanges and other information from the UK’s University of East Anglia Climate Research Unit was posted by an unidentified hacker on a Russian web server.
In some of these documents, scientists discuss a “trick” which can be used to “hide the decline” of global temperatures and issue instructions about deleting contrary data.
One scientist writes in an e-mail: “I’ve just completed Mike’s Nature trick of adding in the real temps to each series for the last 20 years (ie from 1981 onwards) and from 1961 for Keith’s to hide the decline.”
Another bemoans the lack of evidence to support global warming. “The fact is that we can’t account for the lack of warming at the moment and it is a travesty that we can’t. . . .”
London’s Telegraph reports that the most reprehensible are “a long series of communications discussing how best to squeeze dissenting scientists out of the peer review process. How, in other words, to create a scientific climate in which anyone who disagrees with (anthropogenic global warming) can be written off as a crank, whose views do not have a scrap of authority.”
Phil Jones, head of East Anglia’s Climate Research Unit, confirmed to Investigate magazine the documents appeared authentic.
“It was a hacker. We were aware of this about three or four days ago that someone had hacked into our system and taken and copied loads of data files and e-mails,” he said.
“It’s completely illegal for somebody to hack into our system,” he told the magazine.
But Jones denied there was any attempt to mislead or conceal and claimed the missives were misunderstood.
However, outrage over the discovery is causing shockwaves through the scientific community.
Myron Ebell, of the GlobalWarming.org website told World Net Daily that the e-mails are “shocking” and raise a number of questions about the integrity of scientists who support the idea of global warming.
“What I’ve seen there is a very strong effort to manage the issue by scientists and not as a scientific issue. It’s very improper,” Mr. Ebell said. “One of the criticisms is that we need scientists to be scientists, and policy can be handled in public debate.”
The global warming movement is a multi-billion dollar international industry that has exerted considerable pressure upon world governments to initiate a variety of dubious but costly “green” policy changes such as the U.S. Cap and Trade bill which is currently under consideration in Congress.
“The crimes revealed in the e-mails promise to be the global warming scandal of the century,” writes popular conservative pundit Michelle Malkin, “and have massive bearing on the climate change legislation being considered by our lawmakers here at home.”
The scandal could not have occurred at a worse time, with world leaders set to convene in Copenhagen on Dec. 6 to discuss formulation of a new climate control protocol. It is not yet clear what impact this scandal will have on the gathering.
