A provision to strip the corruption-riddled Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) of all federal funds passed the U.S. House yesterday by a wide margin.
By a vote of 345-75, members of the House of Representatives voted to strip ACORN of all funding after an independent filmmaker and a 20 year-old student filmed employees offering advice to a supposed pimp and prostitute on how to evade the law while arranging a business of under-age sex workers.
The provision was attached to a student aid bill and was sponsored by Rep. Darrell Issa, (R-Vista).
“Today’s House vote to deny ACORN federal funding is an important step that follows action by the Census Bureau and the U.S. Senate,” said Issa, the ranking Republican on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. “The battle, however, to deny ACORN federal funding is not over until the president signs the bill into law.”
The Senate Senate voted 83-7 on Monday to deny housing and community grant funding to the group, and the Census Bureau also severed all ties with ACORN regarding the 2010 Census.
Republicans want federal officials to go even further by launching a comprehensive investigation of how ACORN spends and manages federal money.
“As long as taxpayers are subsidizing ACORN and its affiliates, we need to use every measure possible to ensure that those dollars are being spent and managed appropriately,” Rep. Issa said.
President Obama, who has many ties to ACORN and even offered them “a seat at the table” in his Administration, has made no public comments about the scandal.
However, during Wednesday’s White House briefing, press secretary Robert Gibbs said: “Obviously the conduct you see on those tapes is completely unacceptable.”
He added: “The administration takes accountability extremely seriously.”
