The bishops of North Carolina are protesting a draft of a new textbook on Civics and Economics in which opposition to Roe v. Wade is presented as wrong.
In a letter to the faithful of North Carolina, Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge, Bishop of Raleigh, and Most Reverend Peter J. Jugis, Bishop of Charlotte, have asked for assistance from the public in providing input to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction about the text.
“If this text is approved, children taking this course will be asked to explain how Roe v. Wade is an example supporting the way the Supreme Court upheld rights against oppressive government!” the bishops said in a letter to the faithful issued on Feb. 11. “The implication of this proposed text is that opposition to Roe v. Wade is wrong.”
They add: “As a voice united on behalf of the unborn who have a right to life, a fundamental human right, we oppose this draft statement and ask you to join us in making the Department of Public Instruction aware of our opposition and requesting that any reference to Roe v. Wade be removed from this proposed text.”
The Bishops are urging the faithful to provide feedback to the writing team who has drafted this text by visiting the following link: http://www.votervoice.net/link/target/cvnc/9tzg3iBQ.aspx. The deadline for submitting feedback is Monday, February 15.
