Commentary by Susan Brinkmann, OCDS
An anonymous 26 year-old woman who is seven weeks pregnant and wants to have an abortion says she’ll keep the baby if pro-lifers donate $1 million to save its life.
In what some are calling “pro-abortion blackmail”, this graduate student posted a blog to say she has “every intention of having an abortion” but is giving the pro-life world a chance to stop it by paying her $1 million to keep it.
“I’m enrolled in a graduate program in a state that very recently passed extremely restrictive abortion laws that impose unnecessary waiting time to get an abortion and attempt to enforce rules that bypass the doctor/patient privacy privilege. I now feel more comfortable traveling to my home state to get an abortion than I do trying to get one here,” she writes.
In what she alleges is a test of the integrity of the true motives of the “religious right”, she’s going to begin accepting donations on July 7 and will continue to do so for 72 hours, “the same amount of time this state currently requires a woman to wait after a consultation with a doctor until she can have an abortion.”
If one million dollars are raised in those 72 hours, she will go through with the pregnancy, give the child up for adoption and put the money into a trust fund which the child can access at the age of 21.
“I’ll keep none of the money for myself so if I am to be vilified in this process, it can’t be for that.”
If one million dollars are not raised in 72 hours, she will refund all donations and go through with the abortion that is already scheduled for July 10 in her home state.
“Mathematically this means that every one of the 157 million Americans that identify as pro-life needs to donate less than one cent to stop this abortion,” she writes.
“The backward direction this country is headed in terms of its treatment of women I feel is due in large part to the influence of the religious right disguised as the pro-life movement. The pro-life movement cares very little about saving lives and far more about controlling women by minimizing their choices in a wide variety of ways not the least of which is readily available reproductive health care,” she continues.
“I hope to give the American public a concrete example that the conservative right in America doesn’t actually care about the life of a child, they care about controlling the lives and choices of women. We have to acknowledge this and we have to stop it.”
This poor soul has either bought into the phony “war on women” to the point of becoming utterly irrational or he/she is a clever scam artist who is not above pressing the “hot buttons” of a social issue to make some quick cash.
Jill Stanek, pro-life activist and RN, posted the woman’s statement on her blog and received some very unsurprising comments.
“Why on earth should anyone actually believe what she says? She’s a completely anonymous, online stranger. Yeah, that’ll make me want to give someone money. *eyeroll*” writes one woman named Kel.
Robert and Alicia Lawrence BanahdeCristo wrote: “In truth, she should find a bank that will open an account and verify that the money can only be taken out by her daughter, and donations go directly in that account. She would easily get the 1 mil.”
Fat chance. This woman, if she’s for real, is out to make a statement and is using the life of her unborn baby to do it. But we shouldn’t be surprised. The pro-abortion movement in this country has become increasingly crass and unfeeling, tossing jars of feces at police, chanting “Hail Satan”, and acting like a doctor who used a scissor to snip the spines of babies born alive during late-term abortions was all about protecting “women’s reproductive rights”. Now they’re using their own unborn babies to blackmail their opponents.
I don’t want to imagine how much lower they might go.
