A veteran British broadcast journalist has been arrested after admitting on his television show that he killed his gay lover.
According to the Public Safety Examiner, Ray Gosling, 70, was taping his 30-minute BBC show “Inside Out” when he confessed to smothering his former lover who was dying of AIDS.
During the show, he apparently went off-script and said in a voice shaking with emotion, “I killed someone once.”
He went on to say this person was a gay lover from long ago who was dying of AIDS. “In a hospital one hot afternoon, the doctor said, ‘There’s nothing we can do,’ and he was in terrible, terrible pain,” Mr. Gosling said. “I said to the doctor, ‘Leave me just for a bit,’ and he went away. I picked up the pillow and smothered him until he was dead. The doctor came back and I said ‘He’s gone’. Nothing more was ever said.”
Mr. Gosling was promptly arrested on suspicion of murder and taken to a Nottinghamshire police station for questioning. He has not yet been formally charged and is refusing to name the man he killed or reveal when the murder took place.
Assisted suicide is illegal in England and Wales and carries a sentence of up to 14 years in prison although these laws are being regularly challenged.
