Unconfirmed reports surfacing in the Italian media this weekend say that Pope Benedict XVI has appointed Cardinal Camillo Ruini to head an official inquiry into the alleged Marian apparitions at Medjugorje.
According to a report by the Catholic News Agency (CNA), the Italian press is reporting that the Pope has officially decided to form the commission, which will be headed by Cardinal Ruini, the former cardinal vicar of Rome and ex-president of the Italian Bishops’ Conference.
There has been no official Vatican confirmation of this report.
In the Italian weekly magazine, Panorama, journalist and writer Saverior Gaeta said “It’s time to make it clear: it is either the most colossal blunder in the history of humanity or the most important event in the history of Christianity after the Resurrection of Christ.”
It should be noted that Gaeta is the author of a book entitled, “Medjugorje. It’s all true” which was published in 2006.
CNA also points out that news of the Vatican forming a commission to study the apparitions was denied in November by Cardinal Vinko Puljic, Archbishop of Sarajevo and President of the Bishops’ Conference of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
However, he also said at the time that “at any given moment, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith could establish an International Commission in order to study the case of Medjugorje.”
