The Congressman responsible for forcing the U.S. House to withdraw abortion funding form its health care reform package last year says Democratic leaders have admitted to wanting to change the “status quo” by allowing taxpayer funding of abortion.
During a phone interview with National Review Online (NRO), Rep. Bart Stupak (D-MI) said the reason House leaders have stopped negotiating with him over the abortion funding in the Senate health care plan is because they believe funding should be allowed due to cost concerns.
“I really believe that the Democratic leadership is simply unwilling to change its stance,” he told NRO. “Their position says that women, especially those without means available, should have their abortions covered.”
He claims that one of the arguments he has been hearing is, “If you pass the Stupak amendment, more children will be born, and therefore it will cost us millions more. Money is their hangup,” Stupak said. “Is this how we now value life in America? If money is the issue — come on, we can find room in the budget. This is life we’re talking about.”
Stupak also said that during negotiations with pro-abortion Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA), instead of aping the usual public comment that there is no public funding for abortion in health care, Waxman admitted that they want to cover abortions.
When Stupak reminded him that this was not the current law of the land, Waxman said, “But we think it should be.”
This exchange confirmed what pro-life leaders across the country have known for a long time – Congress wants to change the status quo on abortion funding even though the majority of Americans are against the idea.
“This is a health care bill that uses your tax dollars to fund abortions,” said Dr. Charmaine Yoest, President and CEO of Americans United for Life Action, “no matter what they say, no matter how they try to mislead the public, that is a fact. Pro-life Representatives must vote no on this bill.”
