The Vatican entered the world of Twitter this weekend when it launched a feed in six languages.
Zenit is reporting that the Vatican began using the popular social networking cite in order to diffuse information of interest to the faithful.
The six new channels are: English (news_va_en); Italian (news_va_it), Spanish (news_va_es), French (news_va_fr), German (news_va_de) and Portuguese (news_va_pt).
”Through these Twitter channels, Vatican Radio and the other media sources of the Holy See will diffuse information about the publication of news and multimedia content of special interest for the life of the Church,” Zenit reports.
In addition to its Youtube channel (www.youtube.com/vatican), the Vatican also launched a new Web page (www.resources.va) on which it will offer multimedia information on current topics.
In his 2009 message for World Communications Day, Pope Benedict XVI made it clear that he was aware of the “digital generation” and the enormous potential of today’s technology to promote human understanding and solidarity.
“These technologies are truly a gift to humanity and we must endeavour to ensure that the benefits they offer are put at the service of all human individuals and communities, especially those who are most disadvantaged and vulnerable.”
