Italian authorities have deported two Moroccan students who were plotting to kill Pope Benedict XVI during his recent visit to Turin.

Reuters is reporting that police found maps of Turin in the house of Ahmed Errahmouni, 22, which were marked with numbers and circles pertaining to the pope’s visit to the city to venerate the Shroud of Turin on May 2.

Errahmouni and Mohamed Hlal, 26, students at the University for Foreigners in Perugia, had been under surveillance by anti-terrorist police for months before they were expelled from the country on April 29.

An unnamed source told the Italian news magazine, Panorama, that investigators “found evidence suggesting the two (suspects) were plotting an attack on the pope,” Reuters reports.

During surveillance, police had been tapping Hlal’s phone and decided to make their move when the suspect began discussing the acquisition of explosives.

The two have been expelled from the country.
