A SHARED REALITY
As the words from Isaiah remind us, Jesus bore “our griefs and carried our sorrows” (53:4; emphasis added). Thus, He suffers with us in the midst of our suffering, travails with us in the midst of our travail, cries with us in the midst of our sorrows. Jesus is Emmanuel — “God with us”–and no evil or suffering is exclusively ours. It belongs to Him as well. He suffers in us and with us, and thus ennobles our suffering, investing it with divine life and making it capable of bringing salvation.
