“Saint George was a man who abandoned Christ clothed inone army for another: he gave up the rank of tribune to enlist as a soldier for Christ … Clearly what he did serves to teach us a valuable lesson: if we are afraid to strip ourselves of worldly possessions, then we are unfit.”

~St. Peter Damian on St. George

For Reflection:
To what am I attached more than to Christ? Am I willing to be “stripped” so as to be made fit?

UNITING OUR SUFFERINGS TO CHRIST

To participate in the sufferings of Christ through the trials and tribulations we encounter in our lives requires spiritual strength. Just as an athlete prepares for an event by spending weeks and months in a rigorous and disciplined training program, so too do we “train” for the challenges of life by strengthening ourselves spiritually.  This requires self-mastery.  Each day offers us many ways to grow stronger in our spiritual commitment and resolve. On page 132 are some ways to flex our spiritual muscles in the area of personal discipline.
