For the first time ever, a U.S. president has recognized “two father” families in the official Father’s Day Proclamation.

In the official 20 10 proclamation for Father’s Day, President Barack Obama notes: “Nurturing families come in many forms, and children may be raised by a father and mother, a single father, two fathers, a step father, a grandfather, or caring guardian.”

Even the liberal Washington Post commented on the unprecedented proclamation. “Presidential proclamations for Hallmark holidays are generally not newsmaking occasions, but President Obama seemed intent on breaking some new ground with his statement marking Father’s Day,” writes Alec MacGillis.

This marks the first time that “two fathers” were included in the annual Father’s Day proclamation. Last year, the president gave only an indirect nod to homosexual parenting when he honored “those surrogate fathers who raise, mentor, or care for someone else’s child” in his 2009 proclamation.
