THE BODIES

We pulled our cars slowly into the dark alley. Rats scurried before our headlights, frightened by the noise of our intrusion. We parked our three-vehicle caravan in the alley off Monroe Street, near Michigan Avenue in downtown Chicago and stopped in front of a loading dock upon which stood three garbage dumpsters and a filthy blue trash barrel. The address, 30 South Michigan, was crudely painted on the barrel in white lettering.
