Every age is defined–at least in the history books–by the public conversations that occupy its intellectual classes.  In one age it was the debates about labor and capital. In another it was the passionate exchange about the nature of governance. In still another it was about the relationship between religion and citizenship. Can anyone doubt that the defining public conversation of our time is over the meaning of gender? Certainly it is so. With the sexual revolution, all the traditional roles and rules were overturned; and today our media and our courts are preoccupied with fallout.
