Another “Catholic” politician is under fire for promoting practices that are against the teaching of the Church in an effort to win re-election.
Crux is reporting on the campaign of New Hampshire Senator Kelly Ayotte, a Republican who professes to be a Catholic, who is actively promoting contraception in her bid to achieve re-election to the U.S. Senate. In an effort to drum up votes, Ayotte’s campaign is giving away free condoms at the state’s largest university to underscore her efforts to pass legislation that will increase access to over-the-counter birth control, such as the pill.
“What better way to call attention to this issue than by literally making birth control more accessible?” Liz Johnson, a spokesperson for the Ayotte campaign, told the New Hampshire Union Leader this week.
This won’t be the first time the Senator defied her faith in order to promote birth control. She is the sponsor of the “Allowing Greater Access to Safe and Effective Contraception Act” which gives women more power over their health care coverage of contraceptives. It also provides incentives for manufacturers of the drugs to move their products to over-the-counter status but insists that Food and Drug Administration safety standards be maintained.
This is hardly enough protection for women against the many dangerous forms of contraception that have flooded the market in recent years, such as those described in this pamphlet, “Women’s Lives Matters.”
Instead, Ayotte’s office insists that the bill will “empower women to save more for their own health care by repealing provisions of the Affordable Care Act that restrict the use of consumer-directed health plans” such as Healthcare Savings Accounts and Flexible Spending Accounts to purchase these drugs.
Ayotte still has the support of pro-life groups because she has repeatedly voted to defund Planned Parenthood.
Some say her Senate seat could be the key to keeping control of the Senate in the hands of conservatives, but others see her promotion of birth control for what it is – a sell-out of the Faith and the principles upon which she claims to stand.
