Planned Parenthood Gets Desperate

Commentary by Susan Brinkmann, OCDS

Never one to miss a fundraising opportunity, Planned Parenthood CEO Cecile Richards sent a desperate tweet to followers asking them to donate money to help keep clinic doors open in the wake of Donald Trump’s election to the White House.

LiveActionNews.com is reporting on the tweet sent out Wednesday morning which read: “Trump & Pence made it clear that they’d block patients’ access to care at Planned Parenthood. Chip in to fight back.”

Of course, Trump and Pence never said any such thing about blocking women’s access to health care, but this is Planned Parenthood’s typical double-speak which they employ in order to manipulate the emotions – and the wallets – of women.

As Live Action’s Danny David correctly points out, “Trump and Pence have indicated intent to block a corrupt organization’s access to federal funding and to protect preborn lives from being destroyed.” But in order to squeeze money out of their supporters, this gets twisted into meaning “blocking patients’ access to care.”

The tweet also included a link to a page which contained a desperate plea from Cecile Richards:

“Let’s get all these words out of the way: Devastated. Angry. Heartbroken. Outraged. Shocked. Sad. Disgusted. Ashamed. Discouraged. Exhausted. Shattered. And now four more words — the most important ones: These. Doors. Stay. Open.”

After telling her supporters that they intend to keep fighting to protect their health centers, Richards says, “we’re not alone. Most people believe in access to health care, reproductive services, and abortion. We have seen what our opposition is capable of and the consequences are inconceivable. You, me, and the rest of the Planned Parenthood family must — will — stop them. That’s what we do.”

Richards has good reason to be desperate.  A recent report from the Government Accountability Office (GAO) found that the Planned Parenthood abortion corporation and its affiliates received more than $500 million in taxpayer funds, a number which equals 40 percent of its total annual revenue of $1.3 billion. They are desperate to hold onto this money, the loss of which could have a devastating impact on their bottom line.

However, Trump’s election brings that possibility much closer to reality, especially since a Republican-led Congress was able to pass a measure to defund Planned Parenthood earlier this year. Although it was ultimately vetoed by President Obama and efforts to override the veto were unsuccessful, lawmakers have already vowed to try again and President-elect Trump is expected to sign it.

Planned Parenthood’s heyday may indeed be coming to an end.
