Thousands of American Catholics are signing an open letter to President-elect Donald J. Trump asking him to honor the promises he made during his campaign to nominate pro-life justices to the Supreme Court, to protect religious liberty and offer school choice to children in failing schools.
CatholicVote.org is sponsoring the letter which offers heartfelt congratulations to the new president for winning the election and for standing strong for the forgotten men and women of America’s working class. Now that the election is over, however, it’s time to get down to work.
“The voting preference of Catholics . . . was bigger than any person or campaign,” the letter states. “Catholics joined millions of Americans in rejecting the top-down, government-first, technocratic smugness that has for too long infected our political and cultural elite. In doing so, these voters rejected the corporatist arrogance that too often looked down on everyday people. These Americans have been pleading for a more just economy, respect for their cultural and social mores, and the liberty to pursue the American dream in faith and freedom. Until now, they have been ridiculed and mocked, or largely ignored.”
In his multiple media appearances on EWTN and with his personal letters to Catholic groups, Trump promised to be different and boldly made specific promises to this faith community:
1. To nominate pro-life justices to the Supreme Court,
2. To sign new legislation to protect religious liberty, including the First Amendment Defense Act, and
3. To support greater access to school choice — especially for children trapped in failing schools.
Trump further promised to “protect the rights of Catholics to live their faith, to serve their communities, and to act on their beliefs without fear. This approach one would think is just common sense. And I don’t care if people call it politically incorrect.”
In light of these promises, the letter asks the incoming president to prioritize several policy proposals that are important to the Catholic population such as expanding the child tax credit and providing tax incentives for maternity leave and childcare.
“Other priorities include health care reform that is truly affordable, accessible, and respectful of the rights of conscience. We must also rebuild our crumbling infrastructure and remove strident Obama-era regulations on businesses that discourage hiring and growth, thus punishing working class Americans,” the letter states.
On the difficult issue of immigration, the letter asks Trump to forge a policy that will treat every person, including families, with dignity, while securing our borders and ensuring the just enforcement of immigration laws.
The letter concludes by asking the president to weigh every public policy decision by the wise words of St. John Paul II who once said that “As the family goes, so goes the nation and so goes the whole world in which we live.”
“We thank you for demonstrating respect for Catholic voters and for the crucial role the Catholic Church has played in building our country,” the letter states. “We look forward to working with you to advance the cause of life, family, and freedom — which would truly make America great again.”
Thus far, the letter has nearly 10,000 signatures. Click here to sign on!
