An estimated half million people converged on the National Mall on Saturday for a rally honoring the Founding Father’s vision of a God-fearing America.
McClatchy News is reporting that hundreds of thousands of people from all walks of life attended the “Restoring Honor” rally, hosted by Fox News’ Glenn Beck. The event was planned to focus on American heroes and time-tested values rather than politics.
“This is a day that we can start the heart of America again,” Beck told the crowd. “It has nothing to do with politics. It has everything to do with God. Everything [with] turning our face back to the values and the principles that made us great.”
The crowd heard from a diverse speaker list that included African Americans, Latinos and Native Americans; Jews and Christians; clergymen, military veterans and sports stars, including Albert Pujols of the St. Louis Cardinals.
Former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin was the featured speaker and although she spoke as the mother of a soldier, the crowd let out a roar of approval when she took a jab at the president.
“We must not transform America, as some would want,” Palin said. “We must restore America.”
The crowd was conscious of the media’s hostility toward conservative gatherings and were careful not to carry any signs that might give the nightly news reason to criticize them or accuse them of racism. People primarily carried flags or the standard tea party banner – the yellow “Don’t Tread on Me” flag.
Coincidentally, the day also marked the anniversary of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr,’s “I have a dream” speech, which took place at the same spot on the mall 47 years ago.
“I too have a dream,” Dr. King’s niece, Alveda, told the crowd. “I have a dream that America will pray and God will forgive us our sins.”
