In its final report to Congress, the investigative panel charged with examining the law and business of fetal tissue research and trafficking in the U.S. has concluded that Planned Parenthood’s involvement in this trade should make it ineligible to receive federal tax dollars.
The report was issued by The Energy and Commerce Committee’s Select Investigative Panel which held public hearings over the course of the last year in its investigation of undercover videos taken by a pro-life journalist, David Daleiden of the Center for Medical Progress. These videos depicted abortion providers and fetal tissue procurement company representatives haggling over the sale of fetal body parts. The Congressional investigation resulted in numerous criminal and regulatory referrals to federal and state agency and law enforcement officials.
Most notably, the Panel has recommended that Congress defund Planned Parenthood and ensure that grants no longer available to it are given to other healthcare providers that provide comprehensive preventive healthcare for their patients and do not perform abortions.
The panel also recommended that Congress take action to protect women and infants from unscrupulous tissue procurement practices, including the following:
• Ensuring that all donations of fetal tissue are made with informed consent.
• Clarifying the law to ensure that abortion businesses do not harm women in order to procure fetal tissue.
• Enacting a law to protect infants after 20 weeks’ gestation.
• Establishing criminal penalties to enforce the Born-Alive Infants Protection Act.
“After over a year of comprehensive, nationwide investigative work, the Final Report of the House Energy & Commerce Committee’s Select Investigative Panel definitively shows that Planned Parenthood and associates in their abortion empire are guilty of breaking numerous state and federal laws in their criminal harvesting and sale of aborted baby body parts,” writes Daleiden, whose videos shocked the world when released in 2015.
“The report documents admissions under oath by top-level Planned Parenthood leadership that they change their abortion methods to get higher quality baby parts, use fraudulent and invalid consent forms with vulnerable pregnant women, set their prices for fetal organs and tissue without regard to actual cost . . .”
He adds that emails obtained by the Panel even show that the National Abortion Federation sought to obtain kickback payments for each successful body parts harvesting at a NAF-member clinic.
“Law enforcement at all levels must now prosecute Planned Parenthood’s criminal abortion business to the fullest extent of the law, and the American taxpayer should no longer be forced to subsidize the barbarism of the abortion industry.”
Alliance Defending Freedom Senior Counsel Steven H. Aden agrees.
“Congress should end taxpayer subsidies of an abortion business that has enjoyed nearly a billion dollars in profits over the last decade while taking more than $4 billion from American taxpayers. It’s time to end this immoral partnership that has been forced upon the American people.”
