Sacramento, California was the scene of a 12-hour rally on Saturday that attracted thousands of people who came to pray and fast in front of the state Capitol for an end to abortion, same-sex marriage and pornography.

The Associated Press (AP) is reporting that the event, called “The Call to Conscience” was led by Lou Engle, a Christian pastor who has led similar rallies in other cities. Known as “The Call”, these events are considered solemn assemblies and fasts which call people to prayer, fasting, repentance and worship in order to reverse the immoral course of our nation.

“When there is no hope for a nation, when there is no remedy, God has a Holy prescription,” The Call website explains. “We must drop every barrier that divides us and unite in urgent, humble fasting and prayer with the promise that afterward God would pour out His Spirit (Joel 2).”

Engle told the AP that the Sacramento event was arranged to highlight immoral laws being passed out of the Capitol and to call for the restoration of traditional marriage.

“If marriage is going to be upheld between a man and a woman, which we believe is the best for families and children and society, then right now, it seems we need divine intervention,” Engle said in an interview between appearances on stage. “That’s part of the reason we’re coming here, to pray, but also to take a stand and be a prophetic voice to stand for truth.”

The Sacramento event was the 17th fast hosted by The Call in the past 10 years. Previous events have been held in New York, Boston, Nashville, Tenn., as well as in other parts of California such as Pasadena and San Francisco.

People came from all over the state to attend Saturday’s rally, with the crowd filling the west lawn of the state Capitol and spilling onto the next block.

As the website explains: “The Call is committed to mobilizing three generations, every ethnicity, and every denomination from across America to join in petitioning God for His undeserved mercy and to return to acts of justice that would satisfy His heart.”
