NBC Comedy Calls Unborn Baby “Parasite” and “Bag of Garbage”

Commentary by Susan Brinkmann, OCDS

If you’re still looking for reasons not to watch broadcast television, NBC’s twisted comedy Superstore, which aired an episode where a woman refers to her unborn child as a “horrible parasite,” may be enough to convince you to quit the Big Three.

Newsbusters is reporting on the episode which featured surrogate mother Dina (Lauren Ash), an employee of “Cloud 9” superstore, who is carrying her boss’ child. During the ultrasound, Dina becomes frightened at the idea of giving birth and decides she wants to transfer the baby to someone else – like “moving a bag of garbage from the kitchen to the side of the house.”

She later admits to another employee that she didn’t think this through and now she has “a horrible parasite” inside of her.

A sub-plot in this macabre “comedy” features another employee who gets pregnant by her ex-husband during a one-night stand. She admits that she couldn’t resist him because he was wearing an Obama shirt and “I just miss Obama so much.” She is now struggling with how to tell her current husband that the child she’s carrying isn’t his.

Thankfully, she decides against abortion but this is the only positive note in the whole show, which goes on to make a joke out of the gender identity issues that are destroying so many lives.

It occurs during a scene when the man entrusted with the envelope containing the “gender reveal” of the boss’ baby realizes he lost the envelope. In order to cover up his mistake, he launches into a tirade: “I don’t know. You don’t know. The doctor doesn’t even know. I mean, what is gender, anyway, right? It’s just a construct. I mean, look around. We got a football, you got ballet. You guys are writing this baby’s code before it even comes out! You’re perpetuating gender stereotypes! How about we let this kid figure out its own gender? You guys should be ashamed of yourselves.”

As Newsbusters’ Dawn Slusher writes, “My thoughts exactly, only the shame is on Superstore.”

Just because one character opts against abortion doesn’t redeem the rest of the immoral content of this show. Nor does it make up for referring to an unborn child as a “horrible parasite” or a “bag of garbage.”

We need to pray for the broadcasters of this twisted trash – and especially for those who think it’s funny.
