Commentary by Susan Brinkmann, OCDS
Thanks to the deep pockets of the abortion industry and the national press that does their bidding, the Irish people voted on May 25 to allow legal abortion in their country and reacted to this new license to kill as if it was something to celebrate rather than what it really is – the ushering in of a new Dark Age for women and children.
According to the Guardian, 66.4 percent of the country voted to repeal the 8th Amendment of the constitution which grants both mother and child an equal right to life. As a result, the constitution will now read: “Provision may be made by law for the regulation of termination of pregnancy.”
Sadly, only 33.6 percent of the country voted against this measure, which many are claiming is a signal that Ireland has finally “come out of the Dark Ages” and into modern society. Campaigners for repeal used the same familiar talking points that we hear in the U.S. every day: “It’s a woman’s choice!” “My body! My choice!”
Unfortunately, as we learned a long time ago in the U.S., it’s not about women and their bodies. If it was, abortion would be outlawed everywhere.
What it’s really about is money and its alignment with an ideology that wants to do away with the “useless” and the “unwanted” aka the “inconvenient” such as the unborn, the elderly, and the handicapped.
But it’s not just the multi-billion dollar abortion industry anymore. Now, even the big tech companies are aligning themselves against life.
As this article in National Review reports, many big tech companies have European headquarters where they find a suitable tax shelter for their profits.
“In recent weeks, one of Ireland’s leading pro-abortion columnists began baiting the tech companies, saying that the pro-life campaign ‘will be modeled on those that helped both Donald Trump and Brexit to victory’ and that it will deploy ‘fake news’ across social media. This column and many other commentaries amounted to a warning: If the Irish referendum was won by conservatives, the tech companies would get the blame.”
How embarrassing for the Silicon Valley giants who responded to the pot calling the kettle black about the purveyors of fake news! Facebook and Google fell for it hook-line-and-sinker, immediately restricting advertising on the Eighth Amendment and blocking critical ads from pro-life groups in the days leading up to the vote.
And all the while the media was carrying water for abortion ideologues and making it next to impossible for the pro-life cause to get fair coverage of their position.
This resulted in a vote that was based largely on illusions invented by the press and the abortion industry which explains why 84 percent of those who voted for repeal said they did so for the “right to choose.” Another 69 percent cited the health of life of the woman and 52 percent cited pregnancy as a result of rape.
These numbers are a perfect example of how the abortion industry’s fake news brigade have bamboozled women into thinking they won a wonderful right rather than an invitation to the personal disaster that abortion will mean for most most of them.
Study after study has found the overwhelming majority of women who exercise their “right to choose” end up regretting their abortion. But these studies get little press coverage. The only studies we ever hear about on the nightly news are the biased and deeply flawed studies such as the one in 2015 that erroneously shouted “95 percent of women don’t regret their abortions!”
And have the 69 percent of voters who think they need abortion to save the life and health of the mother been told that even the pro-abortion Alan Guttmacher Institute knows that just three percent of abortions are performed for reasons pertaining to a mother’s health? Of course not!
And the 52 percent who voted for repeal in order to spare women who are victims of rape certainly didn’t know when they went to the polls that rape makes up just one percent of women seeking abortions.
The reality is that the top five reasons why women have abortions are: 1) they can’t afford a baby (21%); 2) they’re not ready for responsibility (21%); 3) their life would be changed too much (16%); 4) they’re involved in a problematic relationship or are unmarried (12%), and; 5) they’re too young and immature to raise a child (11%).
There’s not a single reason on this list that can’t be remedied by something much less drastic than killing an innocent human life.
But let’s not tell the people these facts because they might not vote to allow some of the world’s largest abortion providers – some of which are under criminal investigation – from setting up shop for the “good” of Irish women.
The bottom line is that the “yes” vote in Ireland was won by distorted media coverage that fed people a Utopian view of abortion that can never materialize because it’s not based in reality.
As a result, Irish women will now experience first-hand what we all know is the truth here in the U.S. – that more clinics means more abortions which in turn results in the death of whole generations of citizens. It also means more women living with the regret and depression typical of the post-abortive. It means subjecting women to sub-standard clinic conditions where politics often trumps safety inspections and leads to botched abortions, perforated uteruses, infections, and shady abortionists out to make a buck off of women in crisis. Ireland will soon be saying hello to babies born alive after abortion who are left to starve to death in closets or have their spines snipped with scissors.
And so, thanks to the distorted reality they’ve been fed by abortion ideologues and the press, the Irish people dance in the streets, oblivious to the fact that they’re celebrating a choice that will lead them into a new Dark Age – an age that will cause many to experience deep personal tragedy and everlasting regret.
But we can’t let this outcome discourage us. Like the leaders of the “Save the 8th” tell us, the only way to honor the lives of those innocent children who will die as a result of this vote is to fight on.
“The 8th amendment did not create a right to life for the unborn child – it merely acknowledged that such a right exists, has always existed, and will always exist,” writes John McGuirk, who headed the Save the 8th campaign.
If and when abortion clinics are opened in Ireland, “Every time an unborn child has his or her life ended in Ireland, we will oppose that, and make our voices known,” he promises.
“Abortion was wrong yesterday. It remains wrong today. The constitution has changed, but the facts have not.”
