Community of Life

August 16

“A friend must speak to his friend freely as to his second self.”
-St. Jerome
Today’s Reflection:

Such openness of heart is a by-product of the a characteristic of true friendship, community of life.  Essential to community of life is the concept of togetherness.  It is impossible to maintain a friendship if there is no togetherness, and togetherness implies time.  It means time spent in holy conversation with each other, time spent in prayer together, and time spent in sharing joys, sufferings, hopes and dreams.  It means time spent in assistance during moments of need, and time spent in recreation and relaxation.  Sometimes, it simply means time spent in each other’s presence.  And in the midst of the moments together, something dynamic happens.  Trust is built, commonality is established, honesty is promoted, and souls “cleave together.”  Community of life is achieved.
