The country’s leading pro-family organization is warning citizens that White House cyber security and Commerce Secretary Gary Locke are drawing up a plan known as “ObamaNet” that will mandate a national ID card for all Internet users.
The American Family Association (AFA) has sent out an alert regarding this potential new threat to the personal freedom of Americans. Citing a recent Washington Times article, it explains that President Obama wants to establish passwords for every citizen in order to centralize their personal information. Instead of using separate passwords for Facebook, the bank, on-line retailers, Internet users will be required to use a government-issued password.
“The White House will take the lead in developing what it calls an ‘identity ecosystem’ that will centralize personal information and credentials,” writes the Times. “This government-approved system would issue a smart card or similar device that would confirm an individual’s identity when making online credit-card purchases, accessing electronic health care records, posting ‘anonymous’ blog entries or even logging onto one’s own home computer, according to administration documents.”
The government insists the program will deliver significant benefits to the public. As Locke recently explained, “robust identity solutions can substantially enhance the trustworthiness of online transactions. They can not only improve security, but, if done properly, can enhance privacy as well.”
As the Times explains: “Put another way, Mr. Locke is saying, ‘Trust us, we’re from the government, and we’re here to help.'”
Now known as “ObamaNet”, the Times cites the following problems with the program:
• The government will be able to track every web site you visit and every keystroke you send on your home computer.
• The government will be able to track every purchase you make and every deposit and withdrawal, and gain access to your electronic health care records.
• The government will be able to track every blog comment you make, along with every Facebook and Twitter post.
• The government will be able to create lists of your friends and acquaintances and lists of all your political affiliations, political donations, club memberships, hobbies and interests.
• It’s impossible for the government to make this system 100% secure (remember Wikileaks?), meaning criminals would need to steal only one key to unlock a vast amount of your personal and financial information.
“Although the White House will tell you it is a voluntary program, the government ‘voluntary’ programs too often end up becoming mandatory,” warns AFA president, Tim Wildmon, and is urging all citizens to contact their representatives to express their concerns.
“Under the guise of ‘security,’ this plan amounts to another invasion of privacy against the American people by the federal government.”
