Police in Greenville, South Carolina are trying to discover the identity of a woman who delivered a baby boy in the bathroom of a sports arena and left it to die in a toilet.
The Associated Press is reporting that the child was found by cleaning crews after a circus performance at the Bi-Lo arena on Friday night. Authorities say evidence found on the scene indicates that the baby was born in the bathroom.
The baby is white and weighs six pounds. He was admitted to Greenville Memorial Hospital in critical condition and is said to be “surviving” at this time.
Sgt. Jason Rampey of the Greenville Police Department said that they have gotten a number of tips about the identity of the mother and are combing through surveillance tapes for clues. However, the video checks are difficult because thousands of people attended the circus on Friday night.
Police are pleading for help from the public to help identify the mother.
Meanwhile, calls offering to adopt the child have been coming in to the department and are being referred to the Department of Social Services.
