In spite of the gross lewdness that took place during last weekend’s “Gay Pride” parades, the mainstream media mostly whitewashed it out of their coverage.
According to Bill Donohue of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, newspapers across the country downplayed the many acts of depravity that were seen on the streets of America last weekend. Among the national cable news outlets that reported on the parades but left out any mention of the widespread nudity, sex acts and cross-dressing that took place, was CNN and MSNBC. On the local level, Donohue lists KTVU, KPIX, KGO, KQED, KCBS and KNTV as having deprived the public of a full understanding of what took place at those parades.
Some of the coverage Donohue saw included a story in Time Out Chicago that claimed there were “some real gems” in their parade, such as “half-naked, hairy men in bath towels.” The Associated Press (AP) spotted men wearing nothing but jock straps marching in New York’s parade and moviecitynews.com in Seattle noticed a “giant walking penis, and a pack of naked dudes with body paint covering their kibbles and bits.”
But it was in San Francisco where they let it all hang out, Donohue says. It is here that the AP reported the parade had “more than a little nudity,” while the San Francisco Chronicle reported that the march “had its share of nudity and dog collars.” As Donohue notes, “dogs were not wearing the collars.”
The New York Times reported that “Among the usual sights at San Francisco’s annual gay pride parade on Sunday—rainbow flags, lesbians on motorcycles, unfortunately naked men….”
“The electronic media that covered the San Francisco gay pride parade uniformly did not show pictures of the naked men marching down the street,” Donohue said. “Indeed, only KRON, the NBC affiliate, even mentioned the nudity.”
He adds: “There is no demographic group in the nation, among all the racial and ethnic affiliations, which ever features nudity, half-nudity and simulated sex acts in their parades. Indeed, they don’t even march in dog collars. But to those whose idea of freedom is genital liberation, sexuality is their central identity. The real problem here is the reluctance of the media to accurately cover gay pride events. The bias is palpable.”
