I was like a stone

August 25
“I was like a stone lying in the deep mire; and He that is mighty came, and in His mercy lifted me up, and verily raised me aloft and placed me on
the top of the wall.”
-St. Patrick
Today’s Reflection:
St. Patrick outlines for us the essentials for growing in humility: to see ourselves as we truly are, to realize our dependency on God, to know that it is His mercy not our power that heals us, and to place our confidence in Him. Which of these “essentials” do I most need to remember today?

In humility

August 24
“In humility, there is mirrored the central mystery of the process of our transformation – the mystery that our Lord has put into these words: ‘Unless the grain of wheat falling into the ground die, itself remaineth alone; but if it die,
it bringeth forth much fruit.”
-Dietrich von Hildebrand
Today’s Reflection:
What “fruit” have some of my “dying” moments brought forth? To what extent did I see transformation in my life or in the life of others because of it? How does this give me the strength to persevere now and in the future?

The Lord permits

August 23
“It constantly happens that the Lord permits a soul to fall so that it may grow humbler. When it is honest, and realizes what it has done, and returns, it makes ever-increasing progress in our Lord’s service.”
-St. Teresa of Avila
Today’s Reflection:
While this quote does not give me permission to sin, it does help me to see that God works all things to the good, and even my mistakes can be an occasion for spiritual growth. About what one situation, circumstance, failing, fault, or sin does this speak most to me about today? I will praise God for His love and never failing mercy.

Blessing to humble beginnings

August 22
“God always gives a greater blessing to humble beginnings than to those that start with the chiming of bells.”
-St. Vincent de Paul
Today’s Reflection:
Thank you, St. Vincent de Paul. You have helped me to see better the value of that which I see as so small and so insignificant! Lord, I give you all my “humble beginnings,” all of my “small starts.” Do with them what You will. Amen.

Everyone that exalteth himself

August 21
“Everyone that exalteth himself shall be humbled; and he that humbleth himself will be exalted.”
-Galatians 2:20
Today’s Reflection:
In my own life, what instances can I recall where I was toppled by my own pride? What instances can I recall when I was “exalted” when I least expected it? How can I use these experiences to grow in humility?

I knew nothing

August 20
“I knew nothing; I was nothing. For this reason, God picked me out.”
-St. Catherine Laboure
Today’s Reflection:
Read 1 Corinthians 1:28- 29. How do St. Catherine’s words reflect this passage from Scripture? How have I seen this to be true in my own life?

perpetual humiliation?”
-St. Vincent de Paul

It is by humility

August 18
“It is by humility that the Lord allows Himself to be conquered so that He will do all we ask of Him.”
-St. Teresa of Avila
Today’s Reflection:
Do I allow myself to be conquered by humility so that I can do all the Lord asks of me? What evidence do I have of this in my life?

Do you wish to rise

August 17
“Do you wish to rise? Begin by descending. You plan a tower that will pierce the clouds? Lay first the foundation of humility. It was pride that changed angels into devils; it is humility that makes men as angels.”
-St. Augustine
Today’s Reflection:
What opportunities has the Lord given me in the last week to lay the “foundation of humility” in my life? Did I see these opportunities as such when they were given me? Can I cooperate with grace to see them as such now?

What will be the crown

August 16
“What will be the crown of those who, humble within and humiliated without, have imitated the humility of our Savior in all its fullness!
-St. Bernadette
Today’s Reflection:
In this quote, St. Bernadette reveals to us the way in which humility comes “packaged.” What is it? What is the connection between it and becoming “humble within?”
