Today marks the 91st birthday of the man said to have been the “main intellectual force in the Church” since the mid-1980’s – Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI.
The generation of Americans born between 1999 and 2015 – who are the first generation born into the “post-Christian” world – say the presence of so much evil in the world, the hypocrisy of Christians, and the belief that science refutes much of the Bible are major reasons why there are so few believers in this demographic.
Last fall I picked up a book in our parish bookstore – and couldn’t put it down. Alice von Hildebrand’s Memoirs of a Happy Failure captured me with it’s title. While addressing the first session of the 15th symposium for the Canon Law Association of Slovakia this week, Denver’s Archbishop Charles Chaput called upon Christians to fight against the “civil religion” of relativism and the rise of a “state-encouraged atheism” that seeks to reduce religion to “an individual lifestyle accessory.”
