St. Paul tells us that God works all things to the good for those who are called according to his purposes. I came to know the truth of these words in the moment of my deepest travail - the morning I learned that my only son, recently returned from Iraq, had been killed in a vehicular accident.

In those first excruciating days, solace and comfort came via one who had known far greater suffering than I was experiencing. It came through Our Lady, our sorrowful Mother, who welcomed me into her Immaculate Heart through the very dolors that had opened it to the world.

My devotion to Mary was forever changed. It was, in a sense, devotion no longer. Rather, it became an intimacy, a union with her, which has been transforming. What is it about Mary that aids us, but more than aids us, heals us in our suffering, ministers to us in our woes, and provides for us the strength to endure?
