Part of our Christian tradition of prayer comes to us by way of our Jewish roots. A prime example of this is the Liturgy of the Hours which, along with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, forms the public prayer of the Church. Also known as the Divine Office or the Breviary, the Liturgy of the Hours has its origins in the Psalms of the Old Testament which were prayed by the Jewish people at specific hours of the day. The early Christians continued this practice of regularly scheduled prayer, but principally at the two hours of sacrifice in the Temple – morning and evening. While prayers for other parts of the day remain a part of
the Divine Office, these two times are considered to the be the chief hours. Today’s guest will talk with us about the Divine Office, its efficacy, and why it is a holy practice we should consider.
