Old Nature

July 20
"For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, fornication, theft, murder, adultery, coveting, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, envy, slander, pride, foolishness.  All these evil things come from within, and they defile a man."
- Mark 7:21-23
  Today's Reflection:
As we work to fulfill the commands of God through obedience to them, we begin to purge our self-will.  Reminding us that our Baptism in Christ has made us a new creation, St. Paul tells us: "Put off your old nature which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the Spirit of your minds." (Eph. 4:22).  Anything that is in opposition to the commandments of God and the Beatitudes of Christ is sin; it creates a breach in our relationship with God, thereby prohibiting us from conforming to His will.
What is this former way of life, the old self, that deteriorates through illusion and desire?  How is God calling you to "put off your old nature"?
